THE GLOBE.COM
The Globe.com has a fast and easy registration
process, easy navagation to your file manager and
fast response times. They give you 12 Mbytes of
disk space, support subdirectories, and have a
photo uploader at the bottom of your file manager
page. They also have good FTP support with fast
response times so you can easily transload to The
Globe but they do not allow hyphens in a file
name so if you use them you have to change them
to an underscore before transferring. This rule
also applies to your file diretory. In
transloading, files with the same file name will
be overwritten which is a "plus" to me. It seems
that the Globe has everything one would want in a
host server exept for one thing; The html editor
page has a side bar that makes the text area
narrow similar to Angelfire. Also it is limited
in file size to 15 KB which equivelent to a page
of text that you might scroll down only 5 or 6
times. For thse reasons I don't use their editor
but have this site mirrored on Tripod where I
edit the pages then transload them here to The
Globe. This is why the file overwrite abilty is
important to me. If you can work around the html
editor or use their quick page builder instead
then you should find a happy home at The
Globe.com
INERGY.COM
Inergy is basiclly a computer products company
who has put their "Web Desk 2000" software
program on line as a demo. Their goal is to sell
you the software for $59.95 but you need a
computer to use it. In thier demo they will give
you 2 MB of disk space where you can build a
website but the site building procedures are very
different from the other major servers and will
take a little getting use to. They offer lots of
page building tools for you to use and although
the html editor is full screen wide, it is only
about 7 rows high so you might want to use this
site for a "no html" quick page but not for
writing an html page. There is no subdirectory
support that I could find. I found no FTP
support there and without that you can't
transload so I don't recommend Inergy.com for use
with Webtv.
GO.COM
Go.com has made some changes to what used to be
WBS.com. Signing up is a little tricky because
you have to first customize a "start-up" or "home
page" on Go.com which has nothing to do with your
website. Since "Go" is owned by Disney it is
aimed at the other Disney subsidiaries, ABC,
ESPN, Infoseek, etc. You will get a lot of their
information on this start-up page and it is
required that you choose subjects from each for
your page. I had a hard time with this because
in their sports catagory they did not list auto
racing but insisted that I choose a sport. I
think I ended up with something like womens
volleyball or something that I don't remember.
Anyway, The next problem is finding your website
and file manager. At the top of the page is an
options bar. One of the options is "Community".
If you click there and scroll down you will find
"Homepages". Click there and on the next page at
the top of the collumn you will find an option to
edit/create your homepage. Clicking there will
take you to the login page and then to your file
directory. Save this page to your favorites
so that you don't have to go through all
that again. Now let me tell you about the file
manager. First of all your get unlimited disk
space so your site can be as big as you want.
Second, you can create as many subdirectories as
you want. Third, there are three page builders
you can use depending on your skils. A basic
builder that does it all for you, an intermediate
builder where you have a little more control over
your page, and a "pro" builder which gives you a
blank page in the html editor for you to write
your own html document. The html editor is full
screen just like Tripod or Geocities and the
whole file manager is very easy to use. So far
Go,com does not support FTP (File Transfer
Protocal) so you cannot use a transloader to move
files to Go.com. However, they do have a photo
uploader right in your file manager and a link to
their "Web Mover" which is a file uploader
similar to the "EZ Transfer" at Talk City. You
can use that to transfer files from anywhere on
the web to your directory so you don't need a transloader. So far I have been unable to connect with my files at The Globe for transfer but files from Tripod were moved in just seconds. You can also move an entire directory at one time which is great for mirroring your site elsewhere. This server may be a very good place for Webtv'rs to build a website. I am still checkng it out further but am very pleased with what I have found so far.
NOTE: GO engeneers have been upgrading the Web Mover and it is working much better now. It is still not as dependable and the transloaders but without FTP support, it is the only way to move files to GO. I have been in frequent contact with them about this and they are still making improvements. The Web Mover has a problem when you try to move a page containing off-site links. Image files and other html files are moved very fast and no longer with any problem. I will remove this notice when the remaining problems are resolved so check back from time to time.
